Research and Campaigns
Local updates - Overview
At Citizens Advice Wirral, we work to change national and local policies that impact Wirral residents. Our campaigning priorities are shaped by the real-life challenges people share with us when they use our services, helping us raise awareness of the issues affecting our community.
Healthier Incomes Project
In partnership with local charities, we want to gain a greater understanding around disability benefits including: how people access these benefits, what challenges they may face when accessing benefits and the difference these benefits make to their lives.
To ensure the project’s goals align with the needs of those within our community we are dedicated to working alongside those who have lived experience claiming disability benefits for themselves or others.
Through engaging and consulting with disabled people we are focusing on three main goals:
1) Work to improve access to and the quality of supporting evidence provided by GP’s, health care professionals and other professionals for disability benefit applications.
2) Raise awareness of disability stigma and the stigma around claiming disability benefits using social media and local campaigns.
3) Inform and influence people in positions of power to reduce or remove barriers that disabled people face when accessing disability benefits.
The project will also increase awareness and understanding among professionals of the barriers individuals and families can encounter when applying for benefits such as Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children, enabling them to better support those they work with.
Alongside awareness-raising activity, the project will develop and promote practical guidance and accessible self-help resources, including step-by-step information to help people navigate the application process with greater confidence.
